Literature Text

As I stand here, I wait
and as I sit here, I think
I think about what could have been

Would you have my blue eyes
would it be a surprise?
Would you love me, would you hate me,
would you even know me?

As I sit here I pray,
for the one who got away,
would your life have been so bad?
Would it be quiet and calm?
Would I send you to prom?
Or would you hate me like your mom?

As I stand here, I know
I know why you can’t grow
and I blame no one but myself

I was scared to be "dad",
it was driving me mad,
So I prayed, and I prayed,
and now I wish that you’d stayed

As I sit here I pray,
for the one who got away,
would your life have been so bad?
Would it be quiet and calm?
Would I send you to prom?
Or would you hate me like your mom?

When she told me the news,
It was one year since you
were conceived, and I had no idea.

You’d think that I’d feel relieved
instead I just sit and grieve
You may have never been born,
but I love you the same

As I sit here I pray,
for the one who got away,
would your life have been so bad?
Would it be quiet and calm?
Would I send you to prom?
Or would you hate me like your mom?
I’ve been meaning to write this for awhile now, and tonight seems as good a time as any. Some of you may or may not know that at one time I was going to be a father. I didn’t know this at the time mind you, nor would I know that the mother-to-be was even pregnant until roughly a year later. Still, we suspected that she was and that caused me to basically freak out and put undue stress on her. Then she miscarried. This poem/song basically states how I feel about the whole situation. It was pretty hard to write emotionally, but I feel a bit better having put my feelings down on paper.

I wish I could favorite this, but it doesn't seem to be an option on the left side. I know what you are feeling...I recently miscarried, and all those "what ifs" and imagining what could have been...it is just so painful. I'm sorry for your loss. I truly empathize. Beautifully tragic poem.
